How do you get people to engage with you when you are networking?
1. Say: "I think we know something in common". And you better do know your audience!
2. Start with a question that matters to the audience, or with a factoid that shocks. “There's more people alive today than have ever died”.
3. Start a speech with saying: “Once upon a time”, just like telling a story to a child.

In business, a grown-up way of saying that starts by assuming self-interest, that is, tell a story for your own life that connects you to why this topic is important to you, eg. why your first joined the company, why you first saw the someone benefit and you saw how their life was changed, how do you affect the quality of life for a customer? That's where the stories that connect you to the audience come from, because stories are about people, they are not about objects, not about things, its about people behind the things.
