Purpose of a salt bridge in a battery visualized

Salt bridge neutralizes the charge allowing to fully discharge the battery.

In pn junction, as soon as pn junction is formed, electrons more from n to p region and depletion layer is formed with opposing electric field. This field prevents further electron escape from n to p.

In a battery, salt bridge provides ions of opposite polarity which compensate the space charge and hence allows to further discharge the battery.
